I got to know Bennett during my time in New York and talked to him once about Bright Star. You might contact him through the Hangout and ask for any insight he can offer. That being said, Hangout member Bennett Sullivan was the original banjo player, from pre-Broadway tryouts in San Diego and DC and then in New York. ![]() The show is too new for there to have been many local productions and opportunities for banjo players to have been in it. I saw it on Broadway during its brief run in 2015 or 16. “If You Knew My Story” is the opening number. I’m up for a challenge- and Steve taught me my first 2 Bluegrass songs back in 1965 when I was 9 or 10 so I feel I should at least try. He has music for the musicians and tab for the banjo- I’ve never done claw hammer tab. The banjo opens some songs, prominently carries others and in a couple it just plays along. The songs that I’ve plucked along with so far with are in G, D (2 modulate up to E) E and then one is Db. The musicians play on stage but in the background. ![]() It’s very nice music, slow and fast and a good number of songs performed. ![]() When we first communicated he wanted someone who plays Bluegrass, when he sent the music clips there is one Scruggs style song and the rest are claw hammer. It’s a paid gig- and the Director needs 5 string banjo, mandolin, guitar, upright bass, violin and cello players. A friend I jam with (of which I play Irish tenor and has never heard me play bluegrass) gave my number to an out of State Director who is coming to my town to put on this play.
